College of Native American Culture and Ceremonies

Please note:  Participants may bring their own materials or purchase items from the NAC Trading Post.  The instructors will not sell materials for the classes.

  1. Basic Outfitting with Integrity.  What is appropriate in your outfit for your style of dance or ceremony. This class is taught from 8:00 to 8:50.
  1. Footwear.  Different styles of moccasins will be discussed and how to make them. This class is taught from 11:00 to 11:50
  1. Leggings, Breechcloths, and Aprons. Discussion on how to make them and what is right for your style of dance or ceremony. This class is taught from 10:00 to 10:50 Glenda Conk will be your instructor
  1. Ribbon Shirts.  How to make a ribbon shirt and where to get the materials. This class is taught from 8:00 to 8:50 Your instructor is Charlotte Hamaker
  1. Chokers, Breastplates, Bandoliers.  How to make them and where to get the materials.  Discussion on what is right for each of the styles of dance or ceremony. This class is taught from 10:00 to 10:50 Your instructor is Kelly Cannon and the Youth is Braxton Charlton
  1. Headwear. Bonnets, trailers, turbans, and roaches will be demonstrated and taught. This class is taught from 9:00 to 9:50 Your instructors are Howard Wagstaff Advisor and Thomas Murdock Youth Instructor
  2. Quiver and Bow Cases.  This class will go through the steps to make a quiver and bow cases for both dance and ceremonial regalia.  The class will cover the different styles that were common on the historic Great Plains and Great Basin. This class is taught from 10:00 to 10:50 Your instructor is Phil Clark
  1. POWWOW Etiquette. – This class is for new dancers and spectators to familiarize them with what happens at a POWWOW and what is and is not acceptable while dancing. This class is taught from 9:00 to 9:50 Your instructor will be the CVC of the Pow Wow
  1. Traditional dancing.  Elements of Traditional style dance steps, songs, and outfits. This class is taught from 9:00 to 9:50
  1. Grass Dancing.  Elements of Northern Grass Dance steps songs, and outfits. This class is taught from 11:00 to 11:50 Your instructor is Matt Ferrin
  1. What is a warrior? Native American Warriors and how it pertains to you when dancing or performing ceremonies. This class is taught from 11:00 to 11:50
  1. Team Singing and Drumming. Learn about the drum and the songs that go with it. This class is taught from 9:00 to 9:50 Your Youth instructor is Daniel Padia
  1. Beading This class is taught from 8:00 to 8:50, 9:00 to 9:50, and 10:00 to 10:50. You may pick one or all times and one or all beading styles
    1. Lane Beading: This type of beading uses rows of seed beads to make the desired pattern.
    2. Loom Beading: With this type beading a very intricate pattern of  beadwork can be done.
    3. Peyote Beading: This type of beading is done on a round dowel and has a slanting pattern.
    4. Edge Beading: This provides an edge to your project such as shirts, leggings, etc..

** Note: You must purchase you own beading materials. You may purchase them at the Native American Trading Post

Justin Baker will be your instructor for this class We could use more instructors in this class to help also


  1. Wood Flutes: Learn about flutes and how to play them. This class will be taught from 8:00 to 8:50 and 9:00 to 9:50 Your instructor will be Dave Munford
     

  1. Brain Tanning. Learn the basics of tanning hides using animal brains. This class will be taught from 11:00 to 11:50 Your instructor will be Carey Beckstead
  1. Building A Ceremony Team. How to build and fine tune ceremony teams. This class will be taught from 9:00 to 9:50 Dennis Stockberger will be your instructor
  1. Ceremony Acting and Memorization. Setting the stage for quality ceremonies and tips on how to memorize the ceremony roles. This class will be taught from 8:00 to 8:50 Your instructor will be Dennis Stockberger. Your Youth instructor will be Nic Shobe
  1. Attending the Brotherhood ($16 fee). Answer the question “Are you ready to seal your membership in the Order”? This class will prepare an Ordeal member for Brotherhood. (The ceremony will take place later in the day.) ELKUTA is responsible for this class. This class will be taught from 10:00 to 10:50 Jonathan Buckendorf will be your youth instructor
